Development cooperation

African Care has many years of experience in coordinating development projects. Projects have been based in Somalia and the organisation is currently coordinating a maternity clinic and training project in Afgooye, in partnership with local organisations.
More than 20 years of civil war, combined with a continuous cycle of violence, a dysfunctional central government and natural disasters, make Somalia one of the most insecure and poorest countries in the world. Nearly 4 million Somalis are refugees in their own country due to extreme weather events such as drought and floods, and violent conflict caused by the terrorist organisation Al-Shabaab. Women in particular are in a vulnerable position, exposed to discrimination, violence and poverty. In addition, up to 98% of girls in Somalia are victims of female genital mutilation due to a harmful tradition.
African Care has worked long and hard to alleviate the plight of people living in the Afgooye region in particular. Our projects have supported women’s small business activities, political participation and sexual and reproductive health. We have also worked to reduce child and maternal mortality and raise awareness of the health risks associated with female genital mutilation.
Projects have been financed by the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
